What kind of wine is Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru “Mixolydien n° 62” - Stéphane Regnault
The Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru “Mixolydien n° 62” - Stéphane Regnault is born in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, specifically in the Le Moulin parcel, in the Grand Cru classified commune of Oger. It is a Blanc de Blancs, therefore made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, interpreted by the talented winemaker Stéphane Regnault in a personal and contemporary style.
Its name, “Mixolydien n° 62”, is inspired by the language of jazz, where each musical scale represents a unique interpretation, just as each vineyard parcel does for Regnault. Production is extremely limited – just over two thousand bottles – and is the result of a perfect balance between technical rigor and creative freedom. It is made using the traditional Champenoise method (or classic method), which involves a second fermentation in the bottle and a long aging on the lees to develop complexity and finesse.
Vintage Details
The harvest comes from the vineyards of Oger, where the cool microclimate and chalky soil have favored the full maturation of Chardonnay, while maintaining the acidity and mineral tension that distinguish the area. Balanced climatic conditions allowed for healthy grapes rich in elegant aromas, perfect for an Extra Brut of great precision.
Vinification and Aging
Stéphane Regnault ferments with indigenous yeasts, naturally selected on the grape skins, to maintain the authenticity of the terroir. The cuvée is composed of a part of wines aged in barriques, without malolactic fermentation (which preserves freshness and tension), and a part vinified in steel with malolactic fermentation completed, to give roundness and softness. Aging on the lees in the bottle extends for several years, imparting aromatic complexity and extraordinarily fine bubbles. The Extra Brut dosage – with very little added sugar – highlights the purity and depth of the Grand Cru Chardonnay.
