What kind of wine is Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva DOCG 'Le Origini' 2018 - Bolla

The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva DOCG 'Le Origini' 2018 - Bolla is a Piedmontese red wine with a decisive and noble character, considered among the highest expressions of Venetian winemaking tradition. It is made from a careful selection of native Valpolicella grapes – mainly Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella – coming from historical vineyards in the Classico area. It is a full-bodied, intense, and enveloping wine, combining power and elegance in perfect balance.

Vintage Details

The 2018 vintage was characterized by balanced weather, with a warm but not scorching summer and a dry autumn, perfect for the grape drying phase. The optimal humidity and ventilation conditions in the fruttai (drying rooms) favored the natural concentration of sugars and aromatic compounds, yielding an Amarone of extraordinary complexity and harmony.

Vinification and Aging

After harvesting, the grape bunches are left to dry for about 120 days, a process that helps to concentrate aromas, sugars, and polyphenolic substances. This is followed by fermentation with a double maceration phase, a procedure that allows for maximum extraction of color and aromatic complexity from the skins. Aging takes place for 12 months in large oak barrels and subsequently for another 36 months in smaller barriques, before being completed with about 9 months of bottle rest. This long maturation process gives the wine structure, balance, and depth of flavor.

Tasting Notes

Color

Visually, it presents a deep garnet red with intense ruby reflections, indicating concentration and maturity of the wine.

Nose

The aroma is complex and enveloping, with hints of ripe red fruit, brandied cherries, plums, and sweet spices such as vanilla and cocoa. Delicate balsamic notes also emerge, and a hint of tobacco and fine wood, due to the long aging in oak.

Palate

On the palate, it is sumptuous, warm, and velvety. The tannin (the natural substance that provides the sensation of astringency) is well-smoothed and integrated, contributing to a broad and persistent structure. The finish is long and harmonious, with returns of ripe fruit and spices.
