What wine is Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2020 Magnum - Tommasi (wooden box)

The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2020 Magnum - Tommasi (wooden box) is a significant and highly appealing red wine, symbolizing the viticultural excellence of Valpolicella. It originates from a skillful blend of indigenous grapes – primarily Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara – cultivated in the hilly vineyards of the historic “Classica” zone.

It is a full-bodied, elegant, and complex wine, capable of best expressing the traditional soul of the territory. The Magnum format, housed in its wooden box, further enhances the maturation process, offering a slower and more harmonious evolution over time.

Vintage Details

The 2020 vintage was characterized by balanced weather conditions, with moderate temperatures and excellent diurnal temperature variation. These conditions allowed the grapes to reach full and healthy ripeness, ideal for the production of Amarone.

After manual harvesting in October, the bunches are placed in traditional drying lofts to air-dry on bamboo racks until February. The appassimento (natural dehydration of the grapes) concentrates sugars, aromas, and structure, giving the wine its typical intensity.

Winemaking and Aging

Once the appassimento is complete, the grapes are pressed and allowed to ferment slowly for about 25 days at controlled temperatures. This is followed by maceration on the skins, a phase in which color and aromatic substances are extracted, making Amarone so rich and complex.

Aging takes place for 3 years in large Slavonian oak barrels, the wood that best respects the varietal characteristics and adds elegant balsamic and spicy notes. After bottling, the wine rests further in the cellar to gain balance and depth.

Tasting Notes

Color

In the glass, it presents an intense, deep, and luminous ruby-garnet red, with reflections that hint at its aromatic complexity.

Nose

On the nose, it is broad and enveloping: aromas of ripe red fruit and brandied cherry stand out, followed by hints of cocoa, licorice, and sweet spices. Its evolution in the glass reveals touches of tobacco and vanilla, a sign of skillfully managed wood aging.

Palate

On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with a perfect balance between softness and freshness. The tannins are silky yet well present, the structure is solid, and the taste-olfactory persistence is long and satisfying. A sip of Tommasi Amarone offers warm and enveloping sensations, ideal for grand occasions.

What dishes to pair with Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2020 Magnum - Tommasi (wooden box)

This Amarone is perfect for accompanying rich and structured dishes, such as roasts, baked red meats, game, and aged cheeses. Also excellent as a meditation wine, it can be enjoyed on its own, at the end of a meal, to fully appreciate its complexity.

  • Braised beef or wild boar
  • Sliced beef with Amarone reduction
  • Aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Monte Veronese
  • Dark chocolate or cocoa-based desserts for a bold pairing

Storage and aging: how to store Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2020 Magnum - Tommasi (wooden box)

To best preserve the quality of the wine, it is advisable to store it in a cool place, with a constant temperature around 14-16°C (57-61°F) and controlled humidity. It is important to keep it away from direct light and vibrations, preferably in a horizontal position to keep the cork moist.

Thanks to the Magnum format and the significant structure of Amarone, this wine has great aging potential, being able to evolve in the bottle for over 10-15 years. Over time, it will develop refined tertiary aromas and great complexity, making it an ideal choice for those who wish to build a small personal reserve.
