What kind of wine is Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare?

Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare is an elegant and harmonious Piedmontese red wine, perfect for those who want to discover the authentic soul of Nebbiolo in an accessible yet characterful version. It is made from selected Nebbiolo grapes cultivated in the company's own vineyards located in the most suitable areas of the Langhe: Diano d’Alba, La Morra, Collaretto, Serralunga d’Alba, and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. It is a wine with a fine structure, capable of expressing the complexity and typical fragrance of the grape variety in a balanced way, while remaining versatile and pleasant to drink.

Vintage details

The 2023 vintage in the Langhe was characterized by a balanced climate, with good temperature fluctuations between day and night that favored a complete and homogeneous ripening of the grapes. This allowed for Nebbiolos with a fresh and floral aromatic profile, soft tannins, and a pleasant liveliness. The manual harvest enhanced the quality of the bunches and the purity of the fruit.

Winemaking and aging

After harvesting, the grapes undergo traditional fermentation in stainless steel, with a maceration (i.e., prolonged contact of the must with the skins) lasting several weeks to extract color, aromas, and structure. This is followed by aging in wood for about 24 months, partly in large barrels and partly in small French oak barriques. This balance between large and small wood gives the wine aromatic complexity and roundness, while preserving its varietal freshness.

Tasting notes

Color

Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare appears in the glass with a brilliant ruby red color, tending slightly towards garnet with evolution, a distinctive sign of the Nebbiolo grape.

Nose

The bouquet is broad and fine, with notes of small ripe red fruits, violet, and delicate spicy nuances. Aromas of cherry and raspberry emerge, with hints of licorice and balsamic accents that add depth and refinement.

Taste

On the palate, it is harmonious and balanced: the tannins (natural substances present in the skins and seeds that provide structure and longevity) are present but silky, while the typical freshness of Nebbiolo lightens the texture, making it agile and persistent. The finish is elegant, with a fruity and slightly spicy trail that invites another sip.

What dishes to pair with Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare

This Nebbiolo is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs excellently with:
  • Typical Piedmontese appetizers such as vitello tonnato or Fassona raw meat
  • Fresh pasta with meat ragù or porcini mushrooms
  • Roasts, light braised dishes, and noble poultry dishes
  • Medium-aged cheeses, such as Castelmagno or Toma delle Langhe
It is a wine that enhances the flavors of traditional cuisine without overpowering them, making it perfect for convivial dinners and educational tastings.

Storage and aging: how to store Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare wine

To preserve the characteristics of Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2023 - Pio Cesare, it is advisable to store it horizontally, in a cool, dark place, with a constant temperature between 12°C and 16°C and humidity around 70%. While pleasant when young, thanks to its structure and the correct balance between fruit and tannin, it can evolve positively for 6-8 years, developing more complex notes and softness on the palate. A wine to drink today for its immediate elegance, but one that will surprise over time with its depth and harmony.
