What kind of wine is Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 - Poggio di Sotto

The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 - Poggio di Sotto is an elegant Tuscan red wine, made from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in the heart of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the southern part of Montalcino. This area, characterized by altitudes between 200 and 450 meters above sea level, yields perfectly ripe and balanced grapes, thanks also to the influence of the Orcia river and the soils rich in "scheletro" (mineral components) which promote drainage and the aromatic concentration of the grapes.

This Brunello has a full and harmonious body, capable of embodying tradition and refinement in a sip that fully expresses Poggio di Sotto's artisanal philosophy.

Vintage details

The 2020 vintage was considered very balanced in Montalcino, with a regular climate without extreme temperatures. The Sangiovese grapes reached ideal ripeness, maintaining acidity and structure, two fundamental elements for excellent wine longevity. The harvest was carried out manually, selecting only the best bunches to guarantee maximum quality in the glass.

Winemaking and aging

In the cellar, Poggio di Sotto follows a traditional and natural winemaking process. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in large oak vats with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of additives. The prolonged macerations – meaning the time the skins remain in contact with the must – allow for the extraction of color, aromas, and noble tannins. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately 48 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a further 8 months of refinement in the bottle. It is not filtered before bottling, thus preserving its aromatic complexity and the purity of the fruit.

The lively acidity provides balance and freshness, while the persistence is long and enveloping, with a finish that recalls red fruits and mineral notes.
