What kind of wine is Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2022 - Aldo Rainoldi?

The Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2022 - Aldo Rainoldi is an elegant and harmonious red wine, an authentic expression of the Valtellina territory. It originates in the "Grumello" sub-zone, an area named after the medieval castle overlooking Sondrio and representing one of the five most renowned geographical mentions of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG appellation. This wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes, locally called Chiavennasca, which in Valtellina stands out for its fresh and fine profile, with well-integrated tannins and a medium body that favors elegance over power.

Vintage details

The 2022 vintage was characterized by a balanced climate, with warm but not excessive summers and good temperature variations between day and night. The grapes reached full ripeness, ensuring aromatic concentration and a perfect balance between freshness and structure. The harvest, performed manually on the typical Valtellina terraces, produced healthy bunches rich in aromas, an ideal base for a wine of great finesse.

Winemaking and aging

After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in steel at a controlled temperature, with maceration on the skins for about 10 days to extract color, aromas, and the right amount of tannins. The wine then matures for almost two years in Slavonian oak barrels, a traditional wood that gives complexity and roundness without covering the varietal freshness of Nebbiolo. This is followed by an aging of approximately nine months in the bottle, during which the wine completes its balance before being released to the market.

Tasting notes

The Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2022 - Aldo Rainoldi expresses a refined and sincere character, faithful to the Valtellina tradition.

Color

Visually, it presents a brilliant ruby red with garnet reflections, a distinctive sign of mountain Nebbiolo and its natural evolution over time.

Nose

On the nose, it opens with notes of cherry, raspberry, and small ripe red fruits, followed by delicate floral hints of violet and spicy notes of white pepper and licorice. With aeration, mineral and balsamic nuances emerge, revealing the freshness of the alpine terroir.

Palate

On the palate, it is balanced and dynamic: the tannins, soft and well-polished, support a lean but persistent structure. The sip is fresh and savory, with an elegant finish reminiscent of red fruit and a pleasant mineral imprint, typical of mountain wines.

Food pairings for Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2022 - Aldo Rainoldi

This wine is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs perfectly with traditional Valtellina dishes and many Italian culinary preparations:
  • pizzoccheri and pasta dishes with butter and cheese;
  • roasts of white or light red meats;
  • semi-aged cheeses and typical mountain cured meats;
  • dishes with mushrooms or polenta with game.
Its freshness also makes it enjoyable with less structured dishes, ideal for those seeking a red wine with character but easy to drink.

Storage and aging: how to store Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2022 - Aldo Rainoldi wine

To best preserve it, store the bottles horizontally, in a cool, dark environment with a constant temperature between 12 and 16°C. It is important to avoid thermal shock and direct light sources. Thanks to its balanced structure and fine tannins, this wine can be enjoyed young for its liveliness, but also allowed to evolve in the cellar for 8-10 years, developing more complex notes of spices and undergrowth. A perfect expression of Valtellina Nebbiolo, capable of recounting the poetry of the Valtellina terraces and the expertise of the Aldo Rainoldi winery every year.
