What kind of wine is Etna Rosso Contrada Montelaguardia DOC “Fragore” 2021 - Donnafugata

Etna Rosso Contrada Montelaguardia DOC “Fragore” 2021 - Donnafugata is an elegant and deep red wine, an authentic expression of one of the most fascinating territories in Sicilian viticulture: the slopes of Mount Etna. It is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes, an indigenous variety that, thanks to the volcanic soils and mountain climate, yields wines of great personality and complexity. It is a structured yet refined red, capable of combining minerality, balance, and fruity notes with a strong territorial character.

Vintage Details

2021 on Etna was a balanced year, with a rainy winter and a mild spring that favored regular vine development. Moderate temperatures during the summer and temperature swings between day and night allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex aromas and silky tannins. The harvest took place at the end of October, as is traditional for this high-altitude area, giving the wine an intense and refined aromatic profile.

Winemaking and Aging

Fragore 2021 is meticulously vinified: fermentation takes place in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for about 10-12 days, to harmoniously extract aromas and tannins. Aging continues for 14 months in second and third-use French oak barriques, to soften the structure without masking the fruity and mineral notes typical of Nerello Mascalese. This is followed by a further rest of at least 20 months in the bottle, which rounds out the flavor profile and enhances its complexity.
