What kind of wine is Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG “Il Quercione” 2019 - Campogiovanni, San Felice?

The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG “Il Quercione” 2019 - Campogiovanni, San Felice is made from Sangiovese grosso grapes, the emblematic grape variety of Tuscany and the absolute protagonist of Brunello wines. It is a red wine of great structure, full-bodied and refined, an authentic expression of the Montalcino territory. This Riserva embodies the balance between power and elegance, resulting from a careful selection of grapes from the most suitable vineyards of the Campogiovanni estate, owned by the historic San Felice winery.

Vintage details

The 2019 vintage was particularly favorable in the Montalcino area, characterized by a balanced climate with warm but not scorching summers and good temperature variations, elements that allowed for a gradual and homogeneous ripening of the grapes. The result is a ripe, concentrated Sangiovese, with an excellent balance between fruit component, acidity, and tannins. This harvest yielded wines of great longevity and aromatic complexity, ideal prerogatives for a Riserva.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking process for Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG “Il Quercione” 2019 - Campogiovanni, San Felice follows traditional methods but with great attention to enological precision. After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo maceration on the skins for about 25 days at a controlled temperature of 30°C. This process allows for optimal extraction of color, aromas, and elegant tannins.

The wine then matures for 24 months in oak barrels, developing structure and complexity, and continues its refinement in the bottle for another 36 months. Only after this long period of rest is “Il Quercione” ready to express all its character and aromatic depth.

Tasting notes

A Brunello Riserva that impresses with its breadth and finesse, capable of evolving in the glass, offering ever new sensations.

Color

Visually, it presents an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections, a distinctive sign of the evolution of Sangiovese over time and its noble maturity.

Nose

The aroma is broad and layered: notes of ripe red fruits, such as cherry and plum, emerge, followed by hints of sweet spices, tobacco, leather, and a touch of undergrowth. The ensemble is elegant and coherent, with a bouquet that progressively evolves with oxygenation.

Palate

On the palate, it is full, warm, and enveloping. The tannins – that sensation of slight astringency we perceive in the mouth – are fine, well-balanced by acidity and a long aromatic persistence. The finish is complex, with hints of spices and ripe fruit that invite another sip.
