What kind of wine is Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC 'Piastraia' 2022 - Michele Satta

The Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC 'Piastraia' 2022 - Michele Satta is a wine of authentic character, the fruit of Michele Satta's intuition, who in 1991 decided to combine the strength of Bolgheri's international grape varieties with the Tuscan heart of Sangiovese. The blend combines four grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Syrah. The result is a red of great balance, intense and structured, which expresses the Bolgheri territory with elegance and personality.

Vintage Details

The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by a balanced climate, with a hot but ventilated summer and well-distributed rainfall during veraison. These conditions ensured healthy and perfectly ripe grapes, able to best express the typicality of the territory. The 'Piastraia' 2022 stands out for its freshness, aromatic precision, and a silky tannic texture that enhances its overall harmony.

Winemaking and Aging

Each variety is vinified separately to best preserve its unique characteristics. Fermentation takes place in truncated cone-shaped oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, responsible for the natural transformation of sugars into alcohol without invasive interventions. After racking, the wine matures for approximately 18-24 months in French oak barriques, during which period it acquires complexity and harmony. The final blending precedes a short refinement in the bottle before commercial release.

Tasting Notes

Color

The Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC 'Piastraia' 2022 - Michele Satta presents an intense ruby red with garnet reflections, a sign of its youth and the polyphenolic concentration typical of Bolgheri wines.

Nose

On the nose, it releases complex and enveloping aromas: ripe cherry, blackberry, plum, and balsamic notes intertwine with hints of sweet spices, licorice, and slight toasted nuances due to its time in wood. A broad, elegant, and balanced bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is structured yet harmonious, with soft and well-integrated tannins. The balance between fruit, acidity, and body makes it pleasantly persistent and very drinkable. The finish is long, with fruity and spicy returns that leave the mouth clean and satisfied.

Storage and Aging: How to store Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC 'Piastraia' 2022 - Michele Satta wine

The Piastraia 2022 is a wine with considerable aging potential. It is recommended to store it in a cellar at a constant temperature between 12 and 16°C, with controlled humidity and the bottle in a horizontal position to keep the cork moist.

Thanks to its structure and the quality of its refinement, it can be left to mature in the bottle for 10-15 years, developing increasingly complex tertiary aromas over time, such as notes of tobacco, leather, and sweet spices. Served at a temperature of approximately 18°C, it best expresses its elegance and the profound identity of the Bolgheri terroir.
