What kind of wine is Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo

Produced by the historic Sordo winery, the Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 is born in the heart of the Langhe, from 100% Nebbiolo grapes cultivated in the renowned Monvigliero cru, in Verduno. This sub-zone is famous for producing wines of great elegance and aromatic finesse, thanks to its full southern exposure and soils rich in calcareous marl. The result is a red wine of solid yet harmonious structure, capable of combining power and refinement, ideal for those who wish to discover one of the most authentic facets of traditional Barolo.

Vintage details

2019 is considered a balanced and fresh vintage for Barolo. Regular climatic conditions, with warm but not excessive summers, allowed for slow and complete ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes. The harvest took place in early October, ensuring fruit with excellent aromatic concentration, lively acidity, and already finely ripe tannins. All of this contributes to a wine with great prospects, capable of evolving gracefully over time.

Vinification and aging

The fermentation of Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a skin maceration of about 20-30 days, useful for extracting color, aromas, and tannic structure. This is followed by a long aging of two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, which allows the wine to slowly oxygenate and develop the complexity typical of great Barolo. After bottling, the wine rests further in the cellar before being released to the market.

Tasting notes

The Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo captivates with its balance of elegance and strength, a distinctive trait of the best Barolos from Verduno.

Color

To the eye, it presents a luminous garnet red, with orange reflections that anticipate its mature and refined character.

Nose

On the nose, it expresses ample and persistent aromas: small red fruits, cherry, and raspberry, combine with floral nuances of violet and dried rose, followed by spicy hints and light notes of tobacco and leather.

Taste

In the mouth, it is intense and enveloping. The structure is full but harmonious, the tannins are dense and well integrated, while the freshness balances the richness of the body. The finish is long and savory, closing with elegant sensations of dried fruit and sweet spices.

What dishes to pair with Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo

A wine of such complexity deserves structured and flavorful dishes. Excellent with:
  • Braised or stewed red meats
  • Feathered and furred game
  • Aged hard cheeses
  • Traditional Piedmontese dishes such as Brasato al Barolo or Finanziera
For those who desire a simpler yet equally satisfying experience, it can also be paired with tagliatelle with game ragu or porcini mushroom risotto.

Storage and aging: how to store Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo wine

The Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2019 - Sordo is a wine for long aging, capable of improving over time thanks to its solid structure. To preserve it best, keep it horizontally, away from light and at a constant temperature of around 12-14°C. Over the years, it will develop increasingly complex and enveloping notes, making it ideal for those who love to collect and taste great bottles over time. If opened today, it can be decanted an hour before serving to fully appreciate its aromas and depth.
